History

The pipe organ at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Fountain Hill, in Bethlehem, PA was built by the Fritzsche Organ Company and completed in 1969. The 13 rank, two manual instrument is adequate for the size of St. Paul's. The pipes are distributed between two mesh-covered chambers in the choir loft (rear balcony). The locations of the chambers are on either side of the loft. When sitting at the console (facing the rear of the sanctuary), the chamber housing the Great and Pedal Principal Choruses, 8' 4' III and 8'4' 2', respectively, as well as the 16' and 8' Flutes are on the left. The chamber to the right houses the rest of the pipe work including the Gedeckt at 8' 4' 2 2/3' and 2', the Dolce at 8' 4' 2 2/3' 2' and 1 3/5', the Salicional at 8' pitch, its Vox Celeste, the Swell Diapason at 4' pitch, and the Oboe at 8' and 4', all of which are enclosed. The console has 4 general pistons and 4 pistons each for the Swell and Great Divisions, which also captures the Pedal Division. There is also a Great to Pedal Reversible that is activated by both a piston and a toe stud. In addition, there is a Sforzando piston and its respective toe stud. There is a balanced swell pedal and a balanced crescendo pedal. The subscripts next to the stops represent each rank. For example, two or more stops may have the same number subscript, therefore indicating that those groups of stops are unified from the same. The 8' Principals of the Pedal and Great Divisions also have a common base. The bottom twelve pipes that are shared are Haskell pipes. There are two sets of swell shades for the chamber to the right. The one that is on the side facing the other chamber is known as the "Nave" and the other facing the front of the sanctuary is known as the "Chancel." At any given time, both or one of the two can be activated are deactivated.
